What is the Fittonia?

The Fittonia plant, also known as the nerve plant, is a tropical perennial that is native to the rainforests of South America. It is known for its beautiful, vibrant foliage that can come in shades of pink, white, and green. The leaves are typically small and oval-shaped and are arranged in a dense, compact pattern. The plant can grow up to 12 inches tall and wide.

How do you care for it?

To care for your Fittonia plant, it is important to provide it with the right environment. The plant prefers a warm, humid environment and temperatures between 60 – 80°F (15.6 – 26.7°C). It also likes bright, indirect light, so placing it near a window that gets filtered sunlight is perfect!

When it comes to watering, the Fittonia plant prefers to have consistently moist soil. However, it is important to avoid over-watering as this can lead to root rot. Allow the top inch or two of the soil to dry out before watering again. The Fittonia is also known to be a dramatic plant, it can be very droopy if allowed to get too dry, but bounce back within a couple of hours once watered.

The Fittonia plant is also sensitive to changes in its environment, so it is important to be consistent with its care. This includes keeping the humidity level consistent and avoiding drafts or sudden changes in temperature. Additionally, fertilize the plant with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season to help boost your plants growth.

Since the soil is consistently moist It is also important to keep an eye out for common pests like spider mites, mealybugs and whiteflies, which can damage the foliage and roots. You can control these pests by using insecticidal soap or horticultural oil.

How do you propagate it?

If you love your Fittonia and want more propagation is also quite easy, you can propagate them by taking stem cuttings in the spring or summer and root them in a mixture of peat moss and perlite or sand. You can also root your Fittonia cutting by placing it into the water while you wait for the roots to grow.

Overall, the Fittonia plant is a beautiful and easy-to-care-for tropical plant that can add a touch of colour and vibrancy to any home or office. With the right care and attention, your Fittonia plant can thrive for years to come, and with propagation, create Fittonia for all your friends!
