June 1, 2023

Hey there, plant lovers!

Are you looking for a low-maintenance, trendy houseplant to add some greenery to your space? Look no further than the cactus! These spiky wonders are a great choice for those who want a plant that’s easy to care for and visually striking. Cacti are relatable, they need space because they are prickly, but when they have everything they need they grow strong! We’ve all seen pictures of a cool-looking cactus online, right? Those guys get tons of likes. Plus, with so many different kinds to choose from, you can find one that fits you!

Watering Wisdom

First things first: when it comes to caring for cactus plants, less is often more. These desert plants are used to harsh, dry conditions, so they don’t need a lot of water or attention. Overwatering can be a real problem for cacti – they’re susceptible to root rot if they sit in wet soil. Learning to avoid overwatering is important, it’s one of the biggest mistakes you want to avoid when gardening!

A good rule of thumb is to let the soil dry out completely between waterings. During the growing season (usually spring and summer), you can water your cactus once a week. In the winter, you can cut back to once every two to three weeks. Remember to check the soil despite this general rule, because you’d hate to water too early, and a lot of factors in your home can make the soil dry out faster or slower!

Proper Pots

In terms of potting, cacti like well-draining soil and containers with drainage holes. This helps prevent the soil from becoming waterlogged and allows excess moisture to escape. When repotting, be sure to handle your cactus carefully – those spines can be sharp! You may want to wear gloves or wrap your cactus in newspaper to protect yourself. And remember, cacti don’t need a lot of space to thrive – in fact, a snug pot can actually be better for their root system.

Super Sunlight

When it comes to sunlight, cacti are basically sun-worshippers. They need bright, direct light to grow and thrive. If you’re keeping your cactus indoors, try to place it near a south or west-facing window that gets plenty of sunlight throughout the day. If you don’t have a lot of natural light in your home, you can also use grow lights to supplement your cactus’s light intake. When cacti don’t get enough sunlight, they will stretch towards the nearest light source, and this can get precarious fast if they are off-centre and become prone to fall over!

Visualize Varieties

Now that you know the basics of caring for cacti as houseplants, let’s talk about some of the most popular varieties. Here are five types of cacti that are commonly kept as houseplants, and are probably easy to find near you:

  1. Echinocactus grusonii, also known as the golden barrel cactus, has a round, spiky shape and is prized for its bright yellow colour.
  2. Opuntia microdasys, or the bunny ear cactus, has flat, oval-shaped pads covered in fuzzy spines that resemble rabbit ears.
  3. Mammillaria elongata, or the ladyfinger cactus, has thin, finger-like stems and produces small, colourful flowers.
  4. Ferocactus latispinus, or the fishhook barrel cactus, has a cylindrical shape and long, hooked spines.
  5. Rhipsalis baccifera, or the mistletoe cactus, has long, thin stems that drape elegantly over the sides of a pot.

No matter which type of cactus you choose, be sure to research its specific care needs to ensure it thrives in your home. There are hundreds of varieties out there, so find one that speaks to you!

Cacti are great houseplants for those who want a low-maintenance, visually striking plant. Remember to water them sparingly, use well-draining soil and pots with drainage holes, and give them plenty of bright, direct sunlight. And when handling your cactus, be sure to protect yourself from those spines! With a little bit of care and attention, your cactus can be a beautiful addition to your home.
