Green onions, also known as scallions or spring onions, are a popular ingredient in many different dishes, adding a mild and fresh flavour to a wide range of recipes. While they can be easily found in grocery stores and markets, it’s also easy to grow your own green onions indoors. By doing so, you can have fresh, fragrant, and healthy green onions at your fingertips all year round.
I mean, how many times have you bought green onions only to find them wilted before you could finish using them? If you follow these instructions you can say; not anymore!
Start Growing Green Onions:
Green onions are simple to grow and can be done in a pot or container of your choice, as long as it provides good drainage and has a depth of at least 6 inches. I have found that the easiest way to start growing fresh green onions is to purchase a small bunch of fresh green onions (at least 3 plants in the bundle, but I would recommend 5), and place them in a cup or container of water.
After about a week the roots should have grown to be an inch long or more, then they are ready to plant in the soil! Plant the white, rooted end into a pot filled with soil, and gently water to moisten it for the first time.
Care Guide:
To ensure that your green onions grow strong and healthy, it’s essential to take care of them properly. Here are some tips to help you along the way:
Lighting: Green onions need at least 6 hours of sunlight every day. You can place your pot near a sunny window or use a grow light if you don’t have enough natural light in your home.
Watering: Green onions require moist soil at all times, but be careful not to overwater! You can stick your finger into the soil (1 inch in) to check for moisture, if the soil is dry you can water from the tap, with a watering can, or bottom water if the pot you picked allows for it!
Fertilizing: While green onions don’t need much fertilizer, you can add a little bit of fertilizer once a month with water to help keep them growing and full of nutrients.
Pot Size: Green onions are thankfully relatively small plants and don’t require a lot of space to grow. A pot with a diameter of 6 inches and a depth of 6 inches is perfect. However, if you want to grow more than one green onion plant, you can choose a larger pot, making sure there’s enough space between the plants to avoid overcrowding – otherwise, the growth will be stunted.
But what will you cook?
Growing green onions inside is a fun and rewarding project that can provide you with fresh and flavourful green onions for your cooking needs. By following this simple care guide, you can easily grow a healthy and bountiful crop of green onions in your home year-round.
Once your green onions are ready to harvest, you can use them to add a mild and fresh flavour to your salads, soups, stir-fry dishes, sauces, or any other recipe that calls for green onions! With their versatile flavour, green onions are a staple in many kitchens and are a must-have for any indoor gardening enthusiast!
